Job Title:  Manager, Business Development – Central Canada

When did you start at Giffen? March 2025

What office are you based in? Toronto, ON

What inspired you to join the team here?  I desired to be with a small company with goals of exponential growth, a focus on great processes that allow the company to support rapid growth, and a culture of excellence – not just owner driven, but also employee driven. All of these Giffen seemed to and, now I can confirm, does exemplify these qualities.

What do you think makes our team culture unique?  Sounds cliché, but “work hard, play hard.” The team is full of people that enjoy good company, good food, and a lot of laughs, but at the same time knowing that we are here to do a job and do that job to the highest of standards. A team that enjoys upholding a standard of excellence while also desiring a high level of comradery, is a difficult (but rewarding) combination to find.

What is the best advice you could give to a brand-new employee?  Get to know the team, as we have a great group of people here.

What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job or industry?  How reliant the everyday consumer is on mining without ever knowing it. Mining is needed to produce virtually every product that we purchase and use on a day to day basis. From potash to help grow the food we eat, to copper in virtually every electronic device, to lithium in batteries powering electric cars… everything we touch includes some component of a mined material.

When did you first know that you wanted to pursue a career in this field?  I didn’t! I kind of “fell” into it when I started with a major mining OEM and had my eyes open to an area of the economy that supports the entire planet as we know it. I absolutely loved my time in the material handling side of mining and wanted to continue my career in the mining industry for as long as I could.

What do you love most about your job?  Getting to play a part in creating and building critical infrastructure that drives significant economic growth in North America.

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?  Start truly learning as early as possible. Ask dumb questions, pay attention to every detail you possibly can, and try learn something from every person you come into contact with. Everyone has a piece to the puzzle.

What would your perfect weekend look like?  Early morning round of golf where the dew is still on the grass, then spending time with my lovely wife.

What do you like to do outside of work?  Golf as much as I can. Fitness. Time at the cottage. Travel with my wife.

What is your favorite local spot to eat / drink?  A wise man once told me you can never go wrong with the half beef dip and seafood chowder from Lion’s Pub in downtown Vancouver.

What would be your dream job (that isn’t this one!)?   If I couldn’t be a pro golfer… then I would love to own my own business one day.

If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be?  Augusta National Golf Club.

If you could pick any superpower, what would it be and why?  Fly. It would be awesome to be able to get anywhere you wanted at any time!
