Job Title: Director, Marketing + Communications
When did you start at Giffen?: September 2022
What office are you based in? Vancouver, BC
What do you think makes our team culture unique? It’s a very collaborative group of genuinely kind people. Open and honest communication is encouraged and valued both in professional and personal conversations. Every voice actually matters and is taken into consideration when decisions are made. It’s great to have a team who not only talks the talk, but walks the walk too. That integrity is inspiring.
What is the best advice you could give to a brand-new employee? Ask all the questions, say yes to opportunities (even ones you don’t feel are in your wheelhouse), and lean in to the expertise of those around you. You never know where those relationships and experiences will help you throughout your career.
What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job or industry? We couldn’t survive in the modern world without it. It’s not all dirt and rocks (though there is a lot of that!), and there are so many opportunities for both technical and non-technical folks.
When did you first know that you wanted to pursue a career in this field? I don’t think I ever knew. I’m a Kinesiologist by education, but my father worked in the industry. I had an opportunity presented to me to use my science-based education and love for all things communication, and applied that to an unknown industry as a technical editor.
What do you love most about your job? I’m fortunate to wear a few different hats. I get to lean into my technical, attention to detail side with technical editing, and my creative side on the marketing and communications aspects of the job. The ability to do both keeps each day fresh and exciting.
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? Trust the process. Things have a funny way of working out in ways your Type-A planning self could never have imagined – the journey truly is the best part.
What would your perfect weekend look like? It’s our simple morning routine that I love – up early, take Austin (our boundless energy dog) for a walk usually with our newborn son in tow, home for a coffee, then out for a run or cycle or some other activity. Follow that up by quality time spent with friends and family, eating good food (that’s a non-negotiable), and relaxing in our home nestled in the trees. Maybe sneak in a few hours of reading for some blissful silence too (not as common these days!).
What do you like to do outside of work? All the activities – I’m happiest when fed, run and have napped (much like our dog, to be honest). I love being outside and will take any opportunity to avoid chores.
What is your favorite local spot to eat / drink? The Red Accordion – their burger is next level.
What would be your dream job (that isn’t this one!)? Professional athlete (always).
If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be? Anywhere and everywhere, but climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is #1.
If you could pick any superpower, what would it be and why? I’d love to be able to talk to anyone, dead or alive, and not have language or time be a barrier.
