At Giffen, the 2025 International Day of Women in Mining is more than a date on the calendar, it’s a moment of reflection, celebration, and a call to action.
This year’s theme, “Voices of Impact,” highlights the stories, leadership, and quiet strength of women shaping the mining industry across all levels—from the underground face to the executive boardroom. It’s about recognition of the incredible contributions being made, and resilience in the face of long-standing challenges.
We asked some of the women at Giffen to share what this day means to them—and what real impact looks like.
✨ Women in Technical and Leadership Roles – Jade Xiao, Project Engineer
“At Giffen, we’re seeing more women step confidently into leadership and technical roles. Women now represent close to 50% of our management and engineering positions. This is a shift that signals not just demographic progress, but a transformation in how our industry views talent and innovation.
We are building an inclusive culture rooted in flexible work, mentorship, and personalized professional development. Whether it’s through hybrid arrangements or tailored training, we’re making sure everyone, regardless of gender or geography, can thrive.”
💬 Representation that Inspires – Kim Doerksen, Director of Marketing and Communications
“Women in mining, regardless of their role, play a vital part in shaping the industry’s future. When young people can see women leading, innovating, and thriving in this sector, it becomes easier for them to imagine themselves doing the same.
However, if we don’t give credit to the women who have paved the way, both past and present, how can the next generation feel inspired, supported, or valued enough to step forward?
At Giffen, our goal isn’t to meet quotas; it’s to put the right people in the right seats. It’s empowering to see so many of those seats filled by women across management and leadership, with more specialists joining every day. Their presence and influence send a clear message: there’s a place for you here.
By recognizing and elevating women in mining, we’re not just celebrating progress—we’re helping to ensure the industry grows to be more inclusive, and ready to meet the talent demands of the next decade.”
💡 Quiet Leadership and Being Seen – Tania Donahoe, Director of Corporate Services
“‘Voices of Impact’ reminds me that leadership often comes quietly: through persistence, through guiding others, and by being there when it counts. I think of the early days in my career, when I was still learning, but was trusted to guide junior teammates. That kind of respect and recognition, whether it’s a simple thank-you or someone noticing your effort, has stayed with me.
We’re seeing real change now: more women in leadership, more diversity, and a growing belief that capability matters more than connections. It’s not just about being allowed in the room anymore – we’re being invited to lead.”
🎤 Elevating Women’s Voices in Every Role – Yvonne deBoer, BD Manager, Western Canada
“In mining, whether on the owner’s side or in service roles, women are still largely funneled into ‘soft skill’ leadership. But make no mistake: we have CEOs, COOs, managers, engineers, and boots-on-the-ground leaders making real contributions every day.
These voices need to be heard. We are just as capable as men, and while quotas may sometimes open the door, our performance will ensure they’re no longer needed in the future.”
🌱 Resilience Through Connection – Celeste Evans, Junior Mechanical Engineer
“As a young woman in mining, I stand on the shoulders of those who came before me: my mother, my mentors, and the women who showed me what’s possible.
From job fairs to classrooms, they lifted me up, offered advice, and helped me find my way. Their recognition has been a gift, and a responsibility. It’s our job now to create space for the next generation, to show them that mining is a place they can belong, lead, and thrive.”
At Giffen, we believe that progress in mining depends on diverse voices, equitable opportunity, and shared leadership. We’re proud to:
- Foster an inclusive workplace where everyone is respected and heard, regardless of position or gender.
- Support flexible, hybrid work arrangements that adapt to modern professional needs.
- Run a structured mentorship program that connects seasoned professionals with rising talent.
- Provide custom professional development, so team members can follow their own unique path to impact.
This year’s IDWIM theme asks us all to step forward and take part in building a sustainable, inclusive future for mining. A future where leadership is not dictated by role, identity, or geography—but shared by those ready to shape it.
At Giffen, we’re proud to be part of that future.
