As drafting and design have evolved with technological advances, they have become correlated with CAD and supplementary computer software. In the engineering and mining world, pencil to paper drafting has become lost in this translation and the changes following transition along with it. So, after decades of changes to a site and a handful of drawings that may show half the picture, how do we make accurate design decisions?
Giffen’s team have honed their skills with the use of 3D scanning technology. Our high-end ground laser scanning technology allows for a meticulous capture of point-cloud data and 360 photos from plants, facilities, and infrastructure with unparalleled precision, optionally tied to survey ground control points when required. This data can then be translated into a highly detailed 3D CAD model, creating a digital twin that enhances design processes and operational efficiency. The 3D model shows the exact layout including dimensions and the room future engineers and designers have to make changes in. We haven’t even covered the best part, drafters can work within the 3D model, overlaying new equipment, structures, pipe routing or any installation for any ongoing project. Plant Managers and owners can plan and visualize all different design options, helping to anticipate construction issues and execute the projects with certainty.
Our laser scanner, proven methods, experience and personnel ensures exact measurements and detailed representations, reducing errors and improving project outcomes. Combining this with Giffen’s fit for purpose approach, we tailor our services to meet each client’s unique project requirements and follow through with dedication to deliver high-precision digital models. Our team of engineers, designers, and drafters are ready to offer support thereafter on upcoming projects should we be requested.
Our approach empowers innovation and facilitates more effective planning, streamlined renovation projects, minimized uncertainties and maximized cost-efficiency. Facility managers gain access to detailed insights into plant layouts, optimizing maintenance and operational workflows. We help our customers navigate the future of digital plant and infrastructure solutions with precision and innovation.
Giffen provided 3D Laser Scanning services for Coeur Alaska Inc. (Coeur) at its Kensington Mine in Alaska, including the Assay Lab, Crushing Area, Mill, Water Treatment Plant, Tailings Treatment Facility, and Paste Plant. Capturing over 400 high-precision scans, Giffen processed the data in-house to develop large-format 3D models in Plant3D.
The purpose of generating digital twins is to enhance engineering accuracy, streamline design processes, and support capital project planning, maintenance programs, and asset management for our clients. By integrating survey control points when required, Giffen ensures highly detailed and exact representations, allowing our clients to visualize modifications, anticipate challenges, and optimize operational workflows with confidence.
