The Project

Sabina Gold & Silver Corp.’s (Sabina) Goose project near Goose Lake, Nunavut needed two fuel farms to store diesel for their winter operations. The Marine Laydown Area Fuel Farm (MLA) is located next to the fuel barge / shipping unload facility. The second area, Goose Fuel Farm (Goose), is approximately 170 km away from MLA. The fuel is unloaded from barge ships and temporarily stored at MLA before transported to Goose via haul trucks throughout winter. The fuel farms store, distribute, and dispense diesel fuel to support activities at the Site.

Giffen was engaged as a subconsultant for CAD and piping detailed engineering until the project was about 80% complete. During Giffen’s tenure, B2Gold acquired project from Sabina. Giffen was contracted directly to B2Gold to provide detailed engineering services to bring the Project to completion.

Each fuel farm consists of five 10M litre to 20M litre diesel storage tanks, offloading modules, dispensing system, control room and piping system. This represents one additional tank from previous scope, storage capacity increase, and greater flow distance.

Giffen’s detailed engineering team supported B2Gold and the tank fabricator, Nor-Arc Steel Fabricators, to complete the piping and tank nozzles design. The team went through major design updates to accommodate the additional storage tanks and flow requirements. The Giffen team also supported B2Gold throughout construction to accommodate layout updates and additional features such as fuel transfer between tanks, vehicle pass and pig catcher.

Conclusion

Seeing a project evolve from initial concept to finished product is always a rewarding experience for our team. It’s more than just completing a scope of work, it’s about becoming a true partner in the process. We pride ourselves on being fully integrated into the Owner’s team. It allows up to offer proactive solutions, adapt to evolving needs, and work collaboratively to achieve shared goals.

The Goose and MLA project is a standout example of this approach in action. From the early design phases through to the final stages of construction, our team remained closely involved, ensuring continuity, communication, and quality throughout. Watching the vision come to life and seeing it reflected in the finished photos, fills us with a deep sense of pride and reinforces why we love what we do.
