As part of the final closure of the Nickel Plate Mine, Barrick has required the development and execution of various projects related to Tailings Storage Facility stability, water management, short-term water treatment, and long-term water treatment.

Giffen was engaged to assist JDS Energy & Mining Inc. with the multi-discipline detailed engineering of the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Upgrades Project. The WTP upgrades at the brownfield mine included a wet-well and pump station, over 20 pumps and piping upgrades, a 28’ clarifier, and numerous tanks and agitators. Giffen provided the overall WTP layout, wet-well and pump station layouts, and water supply pipeline and related engineering.

The Nickel Plate Mine is a closed gold mine owned by Barrick Gold Corp. (Barrick) located 3 km northeast of Hedley, BC. It was operated from 1987 to 1996 and used surface storage of waste rock and tailings. Interim closure and reclamation construction activities at the tailings storage facility (TSF) were completed in 1998. In order to progress final closure of the site, Barrick requires the development and execution of various projects related to tailings storage facility stability, water management, short-term water treatment, and long-term water treatment.
